The water purifier market in China is on the verge of attaining good dividends over the forecast period (2013 - 2018). Water purifiers are devices aimed to deter bacteria or other contaminants from entering the water supply. Chinese citizens are keen to avoid another disaster like the Lanzhou water pollution incident. The market is estimated to cross USD 1.9 billion by 2018. Products comprise of gravity, RO (reverse osmosis), and UV (ultra-violet) purifiers. RO purifiers are embedded with a semi-permeable membrane which selectively filters out clean water. UV water purifiers rely on ultraviolet radiation to kill harmful bacteria. They are more expensive than RO purifiers and hence will face a declining demand. End-users encompass residential and commercial. Commercial sector is adopting water purifiers in an attempt to protect its employees. Distribution channels include online, conventional, and retail stores. Conventional stores are more popular among consumers and occupy over 40% market shares. Online stores have 17% shares. South China, North China, East China, and West China are the major geographies of concern to the Chinese market. Eastern China earned huge revenue shares for the market. This was followed by North, Northeast, and South Central China. Coway Co. Ltd., Kent RO System Ltd., 3M Center, Honeywell International Inc., and Paragon Water System Inc. are prominent players of the water purifier market in China. Alliances and mergers are a common strategy adopted by these players to sustain their market hold. Recently in 2016, Coway signed an alliance with Haier to expand their presence in the Chinese market.
