Stationary Oxygen Concentrators: Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, Worldwide, 2015 to 2021

Industry: Medical Devices | Report Format: Electronic (PDF)

Home oxygen therapy can be defined as administration of highly concentrated oxygen from a therapeutic oxygen concentrator at home. A new study suggests that stationary oxygen concentrators market was worth USD 670 million in 2014. It is projected to exceed USD 2.1 billion by 2021.

This growth is being driven by rising number of geriatrics across the globe. Older populace often suffers from respiratory conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This necessitates homecare oxygen treatment. Oxygen supply greatly improves the quality of life in sufferers of respiratory ailments. The market is also buoyed by entry of new players and rising preference for lighter devices. Leading market participants include Invacare Corporation, Philips Respironics, AirSep Corporation, and Covidien Ltd.

Adoption of home oxygen therapy has expanded since 1985 as this year marked its coverage under health insurance. This has fueled demand for stationary oxygen concentrators. The distribution system has also altered in recent times. The earlier distribution model was primarily a delivery distribution sales model, having a cost structure that accounted for truck rolls. The modern direct sales system has drastically changed the industry dynamics. It has adversely affected vendors that rely on the distribution network. They no longer enjoy a strong hold on the market.

Oxygen concentrators may be portable as well as stationary. Portable oxygen concentrators facilitate mobility and allow patients to continue normal activities. They are increasingly becoming affordable. Stationary oxygen concentrators are useful at night. Their biggest advantage is that they can provide oxygen under all circumstances. They are capable of providing a stable supply of oxygen during sleep. Hence, portable devices are often supplemented by stationary oxygen concentrators.

Traditional stationary devices have drawn flak for being too large, heavy and bulky which often rendered them inefficient and impractical. These disadvantages are being overcome by new-age machines. Newer stationary devices are lighter, more powerful and less noisy than earlier versions. They are also easier to use. Although affordable to many, favorable reimbursement policies have provided an impetus to market growth.

Manufacturers are focusing on developing products that minimally hamper a patient’s lifestyle. Technological improvements are making home-based stationary oxygen concentrators more effective and user-friendly. Study reveals that the medical oxygen industry could undergo a change supported by economies of scale and new distribution strategy that offers leverage to homecare services.
