A cesium clock is an atomic clock created by using two hyperfine states of cesium-133 atoms. It is used to measure an accurate sense followed by the metric system. It is primarily used in the telecommunications industry where accurate time results in call drops and signal delays can result in a loss. New technologies like video-conferencing and high-quality broadband which carry data rely on cesium clocks.

A cesium clock functions in the following manner. Cesium atoms are heated and passed through a tube with high vacuum. These atoms are subject to a magnetic field. This allows atoms with selected frequencies to oscillate in 9,192,631,770 cycles. This allows the cesium clock to calculate one second.

The cesium atoms in the clock are protected by two layers of metal sheathing. This is done to protect the atoms from the influence of the Earth’s magnetic field, as it can throw of the accuracy of time. The cesium atoms need to oscillate at the same frequency to give an accurate sense of time.

Cesium clocks are known for their accuracy and stability. Its major applications are in research laboratories, banks, telecommunications, and satellite navigation systems. Satellite navigation systems, when dependent on cesium clocks are accurate to a 100th of a microsecond. These clocks are able to function with an error every 140,000 years.
Telecommunications relies on the fact that all mobile networks transfer data at the same speed. This is a standard mandated by the International Telecommunication Union to limit the data speeds of operators. This rule is applicable to electricity grids and high-speed networks (4G) which needs synchronized speed for communication. Banks rely on the accurate timestamp of financial transactions to transfer money around the world.
