Synopsis
The Swedish construction industry grew by 4.7% in real terms in 2016, following an annual growth of 9.6% in 2015 and 2.8% in 2014. This growth can be attributed to the recovery in global economic conditions and favorable government policies for manufacturing companies. In addition, investments in infrastructure construction, healthcare, manufacturing, educational facilities and housing projects supported the growth during the review period (2012-2016). The industry's value is expected to continue to grow over the forecast period (2017-2021), with investments in public infrastructure, energy, commercial and industrial construction projects, and improved consumer and investor confidence. A rise in permits for the construction of residential and non-residential buildings in the country is also expected to support the industry's growth over the forecast period. The government also plans to invest SEK12.9 billion (US$1.5 billion) to develop a fossil fuel free transportation system and construct renewable energy power plants by 2020. Additionally, it plans to invest SEK5.9 billion (US$701.9 million) for the maintenance of railway infrastructure and SEK133.6 billion (US$15.6 billion) to develop regional railway network and tramway by the same year. The industry's output value in real terms is expected to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.85% over the forecast period - up from 3.22% during the review period.
