Android is an operating system created by Google, available for use publicly. Android-based devices have become a trend in the smartphone industry on account of its affordable and low-cost operating system. These phones let the vendors create its own applications and present the consumer with a myriad of choices. Android applications are power-consuming, and have their operations suspended when not in use. It manages to start the applications stored in memory almost immediately, while closing inactive processes. It also lets applications run in the background using minimum resources of the phone. Android updates are released periodically with themes based on sweets and other popular confectionaries. Updates are released for phones running stock Android or phones manufactured by Google. Other branded phones receive updates at a later date, in order for the manufacturers to customize the operating system (OS) according to their needs. Smartphones, other than the branded phones, use an OS based on Android, known as vanilla Android. But the constant updates of Android devices could be a hazard for the consumers. As the new patches could have glitches or security loopholes, it ends up being a security risk for phone-users. Android phones have reached 1.5 billion units as of 2011. The majority of the Android devices have been captured by 4 major manufacturers. These include LG, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola Mobility. These companies together accounted for over 80% share of the Android devices database industry. Samsung seems to have conceded most of its shares to new players like Huawei and Xiaomi. It currently occupies 37% of the Android market, from its previous share of 45% in 2012. Sony and HTC are major vendors which have lost their grip on the market on account of cheaper phones manufactured in China. The number of Android phones has reached 250 million units in Q4 (fourth quarter) of 2011, as reported by Google. It had a previous sales volume of 190 million units in Q3 (third quarter) 2011. Other major companies in the Android device market are Fujitsu, Huawei, Karbonn Mobiles, Toshiba, and OPPO. Regions under consideration by the Android devices database include Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, and RoW (Rest of the World). China expects to catch up to North America and Europe markets by mass-producing the latest branded phones.
