Turbocharger technologies are divided into wastegate, and VGT (variable-geometry turbochargers)/VNT (variable nozzle turbines). Wastgate is a valve that takes away exhaust gases from the turbine wheel in a turbocharged engine system. Its main use is in regulation of maximum boost pressure in order to protect the engine and the turbocharger. Diversion of gases exerts control over the turbine speed which regulates the compressor’s rotating speed. There are two types of wastegate viz. external and internal. External wastegates are able to regulate boost levels more precisely in high power applications as compared to internal wastegates. They could be larger in size as the valve or spring need not be integrated into the turbocharger and turbine housing. Internal wastegate is a built-in bypass valve and passage within the turbocharger housing. Its main advantage is a simpler, compact installation without external piping. Key disadvantage is the restricted ability to regulate boost pressure and lower efficiency. This is due to smaller diameter of the internal bypass valve. Control for a wastegate may be manual, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic. Growth of the global automotive wastegate market may be hindered by rising popularity of VGT/VNT turbochargers. In fact, VGT/VNT is projected to dominate the global market with a share of 64% by 2020. This is due to higher efficiency of VGT/VNT type at low and high speeds. Contrarily, wastegate technology produces high boost at lower engine speeds. A key challenge for wastegate manufacturers is developing cost effective solutions without compromising on quality and performance. OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are concentrating on expanding in the global arena and developing customized products according to regional requirements. Major geographical markets include North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Asia is a major hub for production of automobiles and automotive components. Many vendors from the developed areas of the world have relocated their operations to countries like India and China to take advantage of cheap skilled labor and low cost of other resources. Thus Asia Pacific holds high value for automotive wastegate products. Some important players in the global automotive wastegate market are Cummins Inc., Honeywell International Inc., Continental AG, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.
